Lisbon has the best aquarium in the world, says TripAdvisor

The Oceanário de Lisboa, opened for 19 years, was elected the Best Aquarium in the World by Travelers’ Choice of TripAdvisor, a travel and tourism site with more than 535 million reviews.

For those who are visiting Lisbon, going to the Oceanário de Lisboa is the first thing to do on a list with 429 suggestions to get to know the Portuguese capital. That aquarium is home to 8.000 animals and plants from 500 different species, with its over 30 aquariums.

This institution, inaugurated back in 1998 for the last world exposition in the XX century, dedicated to the Oceans, has received 28.507 avaliations in TripAdvisor. More than 18.000 are considered “Excellent” and 7.774 “Very Good”, with a total score of 4.5 out of 5.

The Oceanário de Lisboa is the first on the Top 10 of the world aquariums of 2017. The other aquariums on that list are Ripley’s Aquarium Of Canada (Canada), Georgia Aquarium (USA), Oceanografic Valencia (Spain), Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies (USA), Monterey Bay Aquarium (USA), Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo (United Arab Emirates), Acquario di Genova (Italy), Tennessee Aquarium (USA) e Vancouver Aquarium (Canada).

“We are very proud for having received this distinction”, said João Falcato, Ocenário de Lisboa’s CEO. “With visitors from all over the world, this is the real recognition that we must continue our work for oceans’ conservation.”

The Oceanário de Lisboa, which had already received the first place of the Travelers’ Choice back in 2015, has now more than 22 million visitors over the years. The heart of the building, in Parque das Nações near the river Tagus, is the central aquarium that recreates four marine habitats, with five million salt-water litres.

In the Oceanário, the visitor may find penguins, puffins, marine otters (the only mammals in the aquarium), octopuses, sea stars, sea urchins, sharks, and lots of fishes.
